Todd, Although I did not know you as well as I did your mom and sister, I want to let you know that my prayers are with your family during this difficult time. I had Norma as a student in third grade at Wolcott Street School and taught for several years in the late 60's with your mom. This is Mrs. Steverson's sixth grade when I was in her class. She had a real gift for inspiring her students to be their best. She encouraged my artistic talent, my reading and writing, and gently guided me to join Colorguard thinking it would help this shy kid come out of her shell. In Room 302 I remember building castles, carving an Egyptian sarcophagus out of wood, making a kinetic "junk" sculpture (that she proudly displayed in the hallway!), and writing my autobiography. Even now I still have some of the projects I made in her class. She was a wonderful teacher and an amazing person.

Mrs. Steverson, my sixth grade teacher (1966), role model and colleague in the teaching profession (1992-2015). I will always remember her encouragement, kindness and that bright smile. She touched my life as I went on to become an educator in the Rochester City School District for 24 years. I thank God for her life and her many talents, but most of all for her" quiet way" of educating me, that I could succeed as an African American in the Education Profession against all odds. I sincerely, thank you Mrs. Steverson, my journey was awesome!

I met Florence when she joined the LeRoy Historical Society as a Board member. She shared wonderful stories about becoming a teacher at a very important time in the history of the civil rights movement. I believe, like many other African American teachers, who were the "first" teachers in some districts, that they were the Jackie Robinsons of their day. She was truely a pioneer. She was very estute, extremely gracious, always had a word of encouragement, and I am so grateful that I had the opportunity to know her. In today's world it is easy to overlook the contributions of people like Florence, but we should never forget their contributions - - never. Knowing her leaves a very warm spot in my heart.

So very sorry to hear of Aunt Florence's passing. I have very fond memories of many times spent with her and the family and will always treasure that. It is not possible to keep our loved ones with us forever and although it is sad to say goodbye it's so rewarding to know we will all be together one day. May our Good Lord have mercy on her and grant her eternal peace and may He give comfort to all those she left.
